If you’ve ever watched the classic John Frankenheimer film Grand Prix then you’ll know exactly what was going through Henry Catchpole’s head while he was driving the Discommon SVF1 Eagle. This tribute to a 1960s F1 car - specifically Dan Gurney’s Eagle Mk1 - is not only fabulous to look at but also brilliant to drive. And the most incredible thing is that it’s road legal!
The original idea for the car came from Joe at Scarbo Performance, but the desire to make it road legal was all Neil Ferrier. As the brains behind the industrial design firm Discommon, he has a mind that works in a different way to most of the population. You can see the evidence in the goods that Discommon produces and the projects they help others with. But even so, as he explains in the film, it was quite a leap to get this car road registered.
The SVF1 Eagle has a naturally aspirated LS3 V8 with equal length headers and a six-speed manual Porsche gearbox. It has discreet, 3D-printed headlights and a roll over hoop, but the aesthetic from behind the wheel is everything you’d hope for. The driving experience is also incredible, with the hyper-alert sensations you’d expect but also a drivability that you might not. And with over 500bhp and a weight of around 1600lb or 700kg it is fearsomely quick.
If you want to build your own SVF1 then you’re looking at around $250,000. And you could, of course, choose to have your bodywork made to look like a Ferrari or Lotus or Brabham or Honda or McLaren or anything else from that glorious era of Formula 1.
