Jade and Tim decided to live on a float home because it was the perfect compromise between wanting to live close to nature and needing to live close to the city for work. Their home is a modern and minimalist black two-story home that sits on top of a floating foundation made with styrofoam encased in plywood. The home is 30' long x 20' wide, and the float is 40' long x 20' wide (the size of a standard float home slip).

Their journey began 3 years ago while they were living together on a small trawler-style motorboat. Their moorage (marina rent) was at risk because any new float home arriving at the marina would have forced them out of their spot. So they hired a boat house (boat shed) builder to build a simple float home shell, and then they finished the interior with the help of friends and family (it helps that Tim is a plumber by trade).
The result is a simple, peaceful, open-concept home that perfectly matches the peaceful river surroundings.
But living on a float home isn't always easy and as the couple says in this video, it can be like the Wild West. Marinas don't have to follow the same rules as landlords on land, so there's little security when it comes to moorage, and there aren't many spaces available for float homes if they do need to find a new spot, like they did this year. Their original marina raised their moorage cost by 35% so they went looking for a new spot and were lucky to find one nearby.
