Solo in the Wild | Catch and Cook | Destination Adventure
The passage between BC and Yukon is a beautiful but stressful trip, mostly because there is no cell reception, wifi or help for nearly 1000 km. One thing I didn't expect to find was wildfires. I was in Williams Lake in 2017 when the wildfires evacuated us, with no idea if we would have anything to return home to. Life in the motorhome is a little easier this way because I can just fire it up and move along, which is exactly what I did.
When one adventure is not possible, it is right on to the next, and I had big plans to catch my first Pike on the fly this summer. I tried several times last year, but unfortunately found no success. I did however get quite a few fish right up to the boat in Little Atlin Lake, so I knew I would go back and give it another try. This year, my success was a much different story. Within ten minutes I was into my first pike, and it was far easier than I had expected. Continuing to fish, my luck stayed consistently good.
I released all of my fish on the first day, but after some research I decided I would keep a couple for the freezer, so I headed out for a second day on the lake. Day two, with a little experience under my belt, turned into an unbelievable day of fishing. I got into a couple smaller Pike, and several quite large. I managed to land two of the big fish, and I lost two of the large ones. Learning to fillet these fish was quite an ordeal, but I had expected that before hand.
Having kept a few fish, I knew it would be great to do another episode of the MoHo Cooking Show, and wow did this ever come out good. If you ever get the chance to get out and do some Pike fishing, and the regs allow it, I recommend keeping one to try. They are very challenging to fillet, but like anything, a little practice and you will have it down.
