Sandblasting Doesn't Use Sand!
The term “sandblasting” is an outdated term, as real sand is rarely used due to the health risks of silica dust, which can cause lung disease. Still, most people continue to use the word out of habit—it’s simply an old trade term that stuck.
Today, safer abrasives like garnet, crushed glass, baking soda, walnut shells or dry ice are used, depending on the surface.
For home projects such as staircases and railings, most professionals prefer crushed glass, garnet, or soda blasting to remove paint without warping metal or damaging wood.
