Two passengers on the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan told Reuters that they heard at least one loud bang as it approached its original destination of Grozny in southern Russia.

After at least one loud bang he began to recite prayers, as shown in this video he shot and which has been verified by Reuters.
Oxygen masks dropped in the cabin and passengers began to panic.
"After the bang, after the masks fell out, I saw that the fuselage shell was slightly damaged, and then I got scared. I thought that the plane would fall apart, that it would decompress and fall apart right now straight away. I was already getting myself prepared for the plane to fall apart."
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday apologized to Azerbaijan’s president for the “tragic incident” in Russian airspace where an Azerbaijani plane crashed in Kazakhstan and killed 38 people — but did not admit Moscow was responsible for the deaths.
The doomed Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 was heading on Wednesday from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to Grozny, the regional capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, when it turned toward Kazakhstan.
The jet crashed and exploded in a fireball while trying to land at an airport near Aktau.
