Why Is Plaid Associated With Christmas?
Why are plaid and tartan associated with Christmas?
Although it feels like a deeply rooted historical tradition, the truth is . . . well, if you don’t want to know the truth, stop watching right now.
So the truth is that the explosion of plaid as a “holiday pattern” began in mid-20th century America as a marketing ploy.
Retailers found out that red and green plaid patterns, which happened to align with Christmas colors, sold extremely well during the holidays.
Department stores, catalog companies like L.L. Bean and Pendleton, and later brands like Ralph Lauren built entire holiday collections around plaid and tartan, cementing the association in consumer minds.
The cozy, nostalgic aesthetic also fit perfectly with that idealized image of winter holidays — crackling fires, rustic cabins, traditional family gatherings — so much so that it became sartorial shorthand for festive warmth.
Now some people may point to Scotland and tartan in the cold weather or the romanticization of Scottish Highland culture during the Victorian era as a way to try and tease out some sort of academic historical link, but the truth is . . . it was all marketing and it worked.
