Tapping Out: A Soldier’s First Embrace
The “tap out” ceremony is a tradition used in some branches of the U.S. military during graduation events, especially after boot camp.
After the ceremony, the graduate stands at ease, they remain “frozen” in place, not moving or relaxing from their rigid military posture, until a family member, friend, or mentor “taps them out.”
This means walking up and physically tapping them on the shoulder, back, or arm.
Only after this tap are they officially released from their position and stance and allowed to relax and embrace their loved ones.
The ritual emphasizes discipline and respect for military customs and creates a memorable, emotional moment for families, who are often the first to embrace their service member after weeks or months of strict training and limited contact.
Every graduate eventually gets tapped out, but if a recruit has no family or friends present, a fellow graduate or his family, or even an instructor will step in to tap them out.
It’s considered important that every graduate is recognized and released
