✎ Phil Knight started his journey with a crazy dream and a fifty dollar loan from his father. He was deeply in debt and often had to sell running shoes out of the trunk of his car just to survive. His first company, Blue Ribbon Sports, struggled for years and almost went out of business many times. He teamed up with his old track coach, Bill Bowerman, who famously used a waffle iron to create a new kind of rubber sole for their shoes. Even when banks refused to help him and he had to sleep in his car, Phil never gave up on his vision to bring high-quality shoes to runners in America.
✎ The path to success was full of huge obstacles. Phil faced lawsuits and at one point owed the government twenty-five million dollars, which threatened to destroy everything he built. He took a massive risk by launching a new brand called Nike. He paid a student named Carolyn Davidson only thirty-five dollars to design the famous swoosh logo. By signing great athletes like Michael Jordan and trusting his team to create the "Just Do It" slogan, Nike grew into a giant company. Phil also faced personal tragedy when his son Matthew passed away, but he used that pain to deepen his commitment to his work and his team.
✎ Today, Phil and his wife Penny focus on giving back to the world. They have donated billions of dollars to help cure cancer and improve education for others. His story proves that you don't need to start rich to build something amazing.
