You don't need a brilliant software product idea to form a successful startup software business. Sure, sometimes founders do come up with some idea "out of the blue". But most successful business are focused on solving a problem for a customer. And the way you find those problems is by talking to potential customers of your software.
I made the mistake in the first 2 software product company startups I founded that failed, of "poisoning the well" by letting my potential customer know what my product idea was when I really should have been discovering their most painful problem!
