With Tuesday's election looming, the Biden administration has been expending its last drops of diplomatic energy trying to broker peace between Israel and its foes - both Hamas in Gaza, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

American envoys left Jerusalem yesterday without a breakthrough, while Israel has continued to strike Beirut and northern and central Gaza, where scores have been killed over the past 24 hours.
