Jury trials for all except the most serious crimes such as rape, murder and manslaughter could be scrapped under new plans proposed by Justice Secretary, David Lammy.

Lesser offences would instead be tried by judges sitting on their own.
“No final decisions have been made” according to a government spokesperson who added “bold action” is necessary to address the growing backlog of criminal cases.
