Forced sterilization is a procedure that removes a person’s capacity to have children without their consent or through undue pressure. In at least 12 EU countries, women with disabilities can still be sterilized against their will, even though this goes against treaties designed to protect them, like the Istanbul Convention and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
In Portugal, for example, autism, ADHD and Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrome can be reasons to sterilize women, even when they are still minors. No one knows exactly how many women in Portugal are affected because there is no reliable data available and the issue remains a social taboo. But campaigners are calling for a legal ban on the practice.
Without EU-wide laws, the decision to prohibit forced sterilization of people with disabilities lies with individual member states.
