In this video from the Berklee Online course in Vocal Production Techniques for Singers, instructor Stephen Kowalczyk Santoro conducts a proximity test in which he sings different frequencies and intensities into a microphone from different distances. He sings one set of frequencies twice and increases the level of loudness the second time. Then he repeats this with higher frequencies. The image of sound frequencies are effectively placed in the video as he sings them, which helps to establish the correlation between loudness and distances. As Kowalczyk Santoro moves farther away from the microphone, the energy and timbre of his voice changes due to the increase in the room sound. This happens with both sets of frequencies independently of their loudness. This proximity test enables singers to understand how loudness is less perceived at greater distances despite frequencies, which is useful information when recording vocals. Kowalczyk Santoro stresses the importance of this technique, describing it as a “way we can shape the feel of background vocals,” an important step in recording a song.
