Government under pressure to fund and build more social housing amid 'severe' shortage | 7.30
Rebecca is feeling the housing crisis more than most.
For more than two years, the single mother has been staying in Cairns hotel rooms with her big family, including two sets of twins.
Over the next five years, the federal government's new $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) is targeted at funding 40,000 affordable and social homes for families like Rebecca's.
In September, the first round of grants was announced with 13,742 dwellings to be built — of those, 4,220 are social and 9,522 are affordable homes.
"The Housing Australia Future Fund is encouraging substantive amounts of private sector investment into social and affordable housing, which means less taxpayer funds for more homes," said federal Housing Minister Clare O'Neil.
Community housing provider BlueCHP Limited's CEO, Charles Northcote, said it was a positive initiative but the need far outstriped supply.
Alexandra Blucher and Nadine Haynes report.
