Latest videos from LA fires: All the blazing destruction including celebrities' destroyed homes
Los Angeles officials were astounded by the historical damage they saw in the wake of the wildfires ravaging the city.
Five wildfires are torching nearly 30,000 acres (47 square miles) in Los Angeles County, destroying thousands of homes and other structures and putting 180,000 residents under evacuation order.
At least five people are believed to be dead — though Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said he expects the death toll to climb once the ashes settle.
"At some point, we'll be able to do a more thorough search of these impacted areas. Some of them look like a bomb was dropped in them where we will be able to bring in canines and other things to help us hopefully not discover too many fatalities. That's our prayer," he said during a press conference with city officials on Thursday.
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said he has not seen such devastation “since the 1990s, when Los Angeles was hit with the fires, the flood, the earthquake and the riots.”
"It looked apocalyptic," he said.
