Did you know North Africa once spoke a Romance language? Long before Arabic and Berber became dominant, the region of modern Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya had its own Latin-based tongue: African Romance (also called African Latin or Afroromance). Born from the Roman conquest after Carthage’s fall in 146 BC, African Romance developed from Vulgar Latin, mixing with local Berber and Punic words. It thrived for centuries under Roman, Vandal, and Byzantine rule, and even survived into the Islamic era—possibly lasting until the 15th century in rural areas of Tunisia!
