Bugatti & Cosworth’s New 986bhp 8.3 V16 – Inside Story!
Bugatti’s modern identity is indelibly linked to the gargantuan 8.0-litre, quad-turbo, funny-shaped W16 engine that powered first the Veyron, and then the Chiron. But when times are a-changin’, how do you replace your headline act?
For the new Tourbillon, Bugatti once again settled on 16 cylinders, but this time they’re in a ‘V’ configuration with not a turbo in sight. Displacement is a monster 8.3-litres, it’ll rev to 9,000rpm, and make 986bhp and 664lb ft before you add in 789bhp of electric assistance via three e-motors.
The new V16 is engineered by Cosworth, the same British company that’s recently created V12s for the Aston Martin Valkyrie and GMA T.50.
So, how does it differ from those two, and more importantly, how does it sound at full chat on a dyno? Over to Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford…
