Start Your Lines on This Dissonant Note for a Dark, Moody Minor Sound.
I think Licks get a bad wrap.
You need to learn vocabulary to speak, and
licks are short chunks of musical vocabulary.
So why not learn licks?
Its not the problem of the licks themselves. Its what you do with them.
A great exercise is force yourself to start on certain degree that you might not normally play or cannot hear yet. This one thing can really open up lots of possibilities.
In this video I demonstrate starting licks on the b6 of the minor.
A dark, ominous sound that is great to have in your improv toolkit.
