In this inspiring keynote address from Berklee Onsite 2024, Tonya Butler brings her theme of “How to Survive Your First Day of School” to life in unexpected ways. Beginning with a grade school photo, she shares a humorous anecdote about her grandmother putting her in a homemade dress, which underscores the first takeaway of “embrace your authentic self and love who you are, the way that you are.” She eventually gets into a very dramatic event that shaped her first day of law school, and how she used all her learnings from previous first-day-of-school experiences to triumph in the face of adversity. Citing the song "If U Stay Ready" by Suga Free (and produced by DJ Quik, Robert “Fonksta” Bacon, and G-One), Butler says “if you stay ready, you ain’t got to get ready,” and she shows how this applies to your music career. “Take accountability and don’t make excuses,” Butler says, and whether you're starting a new journey or facing a crossroads, her insights offer guidance and motivation to help you thrive in both life and the music industry.
