Practice Techniques for Musicians with Barbara LaFitte: Practicing Improvisation 1 | Berklee Online

In this video from Berklee Online’s Practicing Techniques for Musicians course, instructor Barbara LaFitte teaches you how to effectively incorporate improvisation techniques into the music you play. LaFitte explains how improvisation has existed for as long as music has existed and has been documented as a way to create music as far back as the Baroque era. Without improvisation, says LaFitte, we wouldn’t have cadences. Violinist Clara Rose Chisholm plays a Baroque song that consists of a simple melody, but the chords and harmony change. Through the violinist’s demonstration, LaFitte shows how implementing a simple improvisation technique can make a difference in the piece by adding more originality and different tones.
