LARGEST Transport Operation in History
Moving an oil rig is hard. And this is especially true when that oil rig is one of the tallest structures on the planet. Introducing the Bullwinkle. Coming in at 45 meters taller than Chicago’s Sears Tower, the bullwinkle is so immense that it required 10 times more steel than what was used during the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Once that construction was complete, the 500 million dollar rig had to be transported to the Gulf of Mexico. In order to do so, it was first put onto a barge; according to an engineer who worked on the project, this took four days. It was then towed for about 555 kilometers by tugboat, and once arriving at location, had its legs filled with water so that the entire structure would sink to the ocean floor. The Bullwinkle now pumps out 59,000 barrels of oil per day, making its owners billions in the process.
