Mike Fernie travels to the Matra museum in France to dig out one of the most extreme builds ever undertaken by a manufacturer, the Espace F1. Made especially famous via Gran Turismo, this Renault was built by the Williams F1 team in the ‘90s as a showcase for the Renault 3.5-litre V10 engine, which was inserted bang in the middle of the car. With zero suspension to speak of, this people carrier was apparently very sketchy to drive around corners, but was savagely quick in a straight line. We dive into the nerdiest parts of its engineering and suss out how on Earth the ‘90s engineers managed to make this vehicle work.
