Stuck for Jazz Improv Ideas? This One Exercise Changes Everything!
The "Osmosis" Myth: Why "Just Jamming" is Failing You
Some "jazz gurus" say: “Don’t practice licks. Don't obsess over scales. Just listen, immerse yourself, and let the music happen naturally. It’s all about osmosis.”
It sounds poetic, but for most of us, it’s a trap.
The idea that you can absorb the complexity of bebop through your pores is a romantic fantasy. It works for the one-in-a-million genius, but for the rest of us—the "regular" talented musicians—it leads to frustration and "guessing" on the bandstand.
The truth? Jazz is a language. You wouldn't try to speak French by just "feeling" the vibe of a Parisian cafe; you’d study the vocabulary - the grammar etc.
You would hit a wall if you tried to just pick it up
Thats what happened to me.
A lick isn't a "robotic" pattern—it is a concrete solution to a harmonic problem.
Jamming over backing tracks endlessly only going to get you so far.
You need a toosl. You need phrases you’ve mastered so deeply they become part of your DNA
that you can use at the drop of a hat creatively.
Stop waiting for the music to "soak in" and start building your toolkit.
