OLDEST Road on Earth
Step aside pyramids; Ancient Egypt’s most impressive relic may just be Lake Moeris Quarry Road. While not as large or grand, it holds the title of being the world’s oldest paved roadway. Built sometime between 2500 and 2100 BC, it spans for 12 kilometers between a quarry and nearby Lake Moeris. This quarry was special because its rocks were used to build the pyramids. To get there, the rocks would be transported on the road by sled to Lake Moeris. From there, they would go by boat from the lake to the Nile River, where they were then floated to Giza. The road was also special; after all, it is the only paved road in Ancient Egypt that we know of. And while Lake Moeris has now mostly dried up, the legacy of this incredible road continues to live on.
