Pluto Fly Over at 12,500 km from Surface
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew by Pluto in 2015. It took 9.5 years to reach Pluto, which was about 3 billion miles (5 billion km) from Earth at the time of the flyby.
New Horizons came within 12,500 km of Pluto at its closest approach and discovered a notable atmospheric haze around Pluto that appeared to have multiple layers.
