Almost a decade ago, Foreign Correspondent set out to assess the fight against climate change head of a landmark UN conference in Paris – COP21.
"It isn't too late. Is the door closing? Absolutely. But when I look at a door and see a tiny little crack I'm like, well, we are walking through that crack," UN climate chief Christine Figueres said at the time.
From Paris – the heart of climate change talks at the time - the documentary team travelled to Costa Rica, which has made a virtue of oil and coal poverty, embracing eco-tourism.
"We are very proud in Costa Rica to have a model that guarantees us our own energy," Elbert Hidalgo from the Costa Rica state power company said at the time. The country had planned to be carbon neutral by 2021, using a mixture of wind, solar, hydro and thermal energy. That goal has since been pushed back.
In Germany, tens of thousands of wind turbines were already turning in 2015 and consumers paid a renewables levy to ease the transition from coal and nuclear power. Australia had fewer than 2000 turbines at the time.
