Living With Canadas Biggest Predator - Destination Adventure
Bears are a factor in every day life if you choose to travel in the north, especially if you are going remote. Many. people avoid locations, specifically because of the fear of bears, but they will be missing the best parts. This was my first visit to the south end of Work Channel, British Columbia and wow was it ever beautiful. I have covered more than half of the channel, but coming in from the mouth, and the entire area is spectacular. We had some amazing whale encounters on the other end of the channel, and now this visit brought us some of the best grizzly bear viewing I have ever seen. These bears out here rarely see humans, so they are both fearful and curious. The mom and cub that we saw several times, were very fearful of the boat and ran right away. The boars on the other hand were much more curious. The one that was so close to camp could not have cared less about us from the boat. I yelled, and he wouldn't even look up. Once on shore though, he was much more curious. I went down to the waterline to take some photos, though still plenty far away, and as soon as he saw me, he was on route. At first just walking, and my yelling did nothing to deter him. I was not far from camp, so I knew it would be safe to maintain a quick pace for the short jog back, but I was surprised to look back and see that his pace had also increased to match mine. I kicked it into high gear and got myself back to safety, but it wasn't long until he was right in camp with us. We did scare him off, and every day we saw the bears from the boat we would just talk to them a little bit. This sounds strange, but it does help them understand the boundaries of the area. Theres a lot of forest out there, and bears would really prefer to be away from humans, so if you let them know you're there, they will mostly stay away. All in all we had an amazing stay, but the only thing Work Channel has never provided me, is Shrimp or Crab. I have tried at both ends, but success has yet to be found.
Until the next time, thank you Work Channel.
