What happens when a blue state votes on trans sports?
Twenty-seven Republican-controlled states have imposed measures to restrict trans athletes from playing in girls’ and women’s sports since 2020, but this November will be the first time voters have a chance to weigh in on the question directly. Ballot measures are appearing this year in Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska.
But Washington’s goes further than any other state in one key way: it would apply to all students seeking to play girls’ sports, not just athletes whose eligibility has been challenged.
The initiative, I-638, would require every girl to prove their sex assigned at birth, via “only one or more of the following: the student's reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels.”
Opponents — like Kelsey Gellner, Seattle-based pediatric nurse and board member for the Washington State Nurses Association — organizing under the NO HATE in WA State campaign, warn that the more than 150,000 school-age girls in Washington without a regular family doctor may be forced to undergo invasive genital inspections, or forgo participation in sports altogether if they can’t afford the alternative testing options.
Supporters — like Dr. Erica Li, a board-certified pediatrician in Spokane, Washington — organizing with Let's Go WA, say the fears are overblown and represent a common-sense and popular reform.
