I Was Wrong About The D'Addario Controversy
A week ago D'Addario released a demo for their new low-tuned string set, and within hours the guitar internet had decided it was AI. Then things got messy, deleted comments, a cell phone video of a Logic session, a written statement that didn't add up, and a
person getting doxxed over it.
So I asked for the session, and they agreed to let me take a look
I think I know what happened. I also think the bigger story is not D'Addario.
Timestamps below.
0:00 Intro
0:40 What actually happened, in case you missed it
1:13 The deleted comments
1:37 The cell phone video that made it worse
2:20 Landr is not generative AI — an important distinction
3:12 How I got this session (full disclaimer)
4:17 Opening the session for the first time
4:55 Listen: the Logic session
6:00 Listen: the demo D'Addario actually posted
7:19 These are not the same track
7:37 Inside the mix
8:25 The drum EQ curve
8:53 Running the demo through AI detection
9:55 So Suno was used
10:05 Is the session a coverup?
11:04 The Fader drum stem changes things
12:29 The 2020 song this was built from
13:17 My hypothesis
14:11 I signed up for Suno
14:55 Attempt one
16:26 Reworking the prompt
17:15 Close, but drifting
17:35 Does any of this even matter?
18:00 Where I stand on generative AI
19:22 The fair criticism of D'Addario
20:04 The doxxing issue
22:16 The other side of this mess
24:08 The companies actually doing the damage
24:59 We need labeling and we need legislation
25:33 The closest Suno got
26:28 Where I land on all of this
28:05 A comment that sums it up better than I can
29:24 Looking at you, Fender
29:43 Final thoughts
What do you think happened? Let me know in the comments.
Thank you to my friend at D'Addario, and to D'Addario, for being transparent and letting
me look at this.
