Okay, stupid headline, but really: at what point will video game movies go from being just popcorn adaptations of an upstart medium to serious works of cinema? Up until Christopher Nolan came along, Batman movies were generally pretty goofy, but Batman Begins led to The Dark Knight, which clearly respected its source material and audience. Alex Garland is currently shooting A24’s Elden Ring movie, and based on his track record, it could very well do something similar. Meanwhile, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil isn’t winning over die-hard fans quite yet, but considering his track record and love of the games, maybe we should give him a chance?
