Columbia in chaos as hundreds of anti-Israel protesters defy order to vacate tent camp
Columbia University failed to bring disruptive anti-Israel protests under control Monday, as hundreds of protesters openly defied the school’s 2 p.m. ultimatum to vacate the campus encampment or face suspension and loss of access to dorms and class buildings. “We will not back down,” student leaders proclaimed in a statement before the deadline expired.
As the deadline ticked away, hundreds of protesters remained on campus, beating drums and chanting slogans like “free, free, free Palestine” as they marched, beat drums and lounged around the tent city.
Around three dozen Columbia employees wearing brightly colored crossing guard-style vests reading “faculty” linked arms outside the encampment in silence, joining the students after the deadline lapsed.
