We’re definitely excited for Insomniac’s spin on Wolverine, but we’re trying to keep expectations in check. On a strictly mechanical level, will a linear hack-and-slash be as much fun moment-to-moment as an open-world web-swinging simulator? Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2 are all a great time even when you’re not doing anything particularly super-heroic, but in Wolverine’s case, it’s a linear experience focused primarily on combat. Will that have as much lasting appeal? Meanwhile, Spider-Man’s friendly neighborhood all-ages appeal and T-rating might have something to do with the first installment being Sony’s best-selling PS4 game, but Wolverine’s M-rating and focus on gruesome combat might not do it any favors this holiday shopping season. Meanwhile, this game might have gotten a bit more attention two years ago, when Deadpool and Wolverine was in theaters, rather than coming out in the wake of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
