Isabeau Miller discusses the four different types of music publishing deals (and how to decide which one is best for your needs as a songwriter) in this video from the Berklee Online course The Business of Songwriting: Protecting, Marketing and Monetizing Your Craft. The first type of publishing deal is a traditional publishing deal, where the music publishing company offers writers an advance for their songs that will later be recouped from royalties. The second deal is the co-publishing deal, where the songwriter and publisher come into an agreement on the publishing percentage each party receives. In general, the less ownership a songwriter gives to the publisher, the smaller the advance is likely to be. The third type of deal is the administrative publishing deal, where the songwriter pays the publisher to collect royalties and administer publishing rights, but the company is not responsible for pitching songs. Lastly, the single-song publishing deal applies to a single composition and can serve as a way for a publisher and songwriter to evaluate whether they are a good fit for a longer-term relationship.
