From fatal self-experiments and radioactive disasters to human-animal hybrid attempts, unethical psychology studies, and scientists deliberately exposing themselves to deadly diseases, these stories prove intelligence does not always come with common sense.
This countdown examines 25 of history’s strangest scientific experiments, including Francis Bacon freezing a chicken in the snow, Il’ya Ivanov attempting to create human-ape hybrids, Marie Curie’s fatal radiation exposure, and Alexander Bogdanov’s disastrous blood transfusions. We also explore the Little Albert experiment, milk used as a blood substitute, MKUltra, the Stanford Prison Experiment, and bizarre research involving LSD, flatworms, testicles, public bathrooms, and the supposed weight of the human soul.
Some of these scientists made genuine discoveries, others manipulated results, ignored warnings, harmed innocent people, or died trying to prove theories that were completely wrong.
Science advances through experimentation, but these researchers took “testing the limits” far beyond anything resembling good judgment.
