Ousted Syrian Leader Convicted of War Crimes and Sentenced to Death
A Syrian court has sentenced ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his younger brother Maher to death in absentia for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during Syria’s 14-year conflict. Assad and Maher fled to Russia after the regime fell in December 2024. Assad’s cousin Atef Najib was also sentenced to death for his role in the crackdown in Daraa that helped trigger the uprising and subsequent civil war.
