Zosimus, writing in Constantinople, recalled 253 AD as Goths plundered Black Sea shores while plague raged across towns and villages. But the rot began earlier. In 193 AD the Praetorian Guard auctioned the imperial throne to Didius Julianus after killing Pertinax, triggering the Year of Five Emperors. Across the third century, soldiers made and unmade emperors, coinage was debased to bribe legions, and the Plague of Cyprian hollowed population and production.
There were flashes of recovery. Aurelian, hailed Restitutor Orbis, crushed Palmyra and the Gallic breakaway and raised the Aurelian Walls to shield Rome. Diocletian imposed the Tetrarchy to share rule and pursued the Great Persecution. Constantine defeated Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge, legalized Christianity with the Edict of Milan, founded Constantinople, and convened the Council of Nicaea.
External shocks kept mounting. At Adrianople in 378 the Goths killed Emperor Valens. Alaric's Visigoths besieged Rome repeatedly and finally sacked the city in 410. Meanwhile Vandals, Alans, and Suebi crossed the Rhine in 406, likely over ice; Britain was abandoned in 410; Attila's Huns coerced tribute and invaded Italy; and the Vandals returned to sack Rome again in 455.
In 476 Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus and styled himself King of Italy. The East endured as the Byzantine Empire, briefly reconquering parts of the West under Justinian and Belisarius before Arab conquests, Slavic migrations, and new powers reshaped the map. Yet Rome's legacy persisted in law, language, the Church, and the very idea of empire, revived in 800 when Charlemagne was crowned in Rome.
