Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s US Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim elected to the chamber.

Backed by progressives including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, he campaigned for Medicare for All, reducing corporate influence in politics and ending US military aid to Israel.
El-Sayed also faced repeated attacks targeting his Muslim faith during the campaign. President Donald Trump called him a ‘jihadist’ and repeatedly mocked his name, often referring to him by his middle name, Mohamed, rather than Abdul.
