Homeless, jobless, leaving: what’s driving New Zealanders away? | The Pacific
On this episode of The Pacific: Kathryn, David and their son Eli spent two years living in an RV in Auckland, cooking in tents and showering outside. They are one of more than 112,000 people in Aotearoa, New Zealand who are severely housing deprived, and Māori and Pacific families are hit hardest.
In 2023, the newly elected coalition Government promised jobs, lower living costs and more homes. Three years on, unemployment is at an 11-year high, homelessness is rising, and more than 360,000 New Zealanders have left, almost half for Australia.
Ahead of the November 7 national election, Māori and Pacific communities share what the past three years have cost them, and why so many of their loved ones are leaving Aotearoa.
‘The Pacific’ is hosted by Johnson Raela and Alice Lolohea.
