All teachers in New South Wales will undertake training in a style of teaching called "explicit instruction" immediately after the Easter holidays. It takes the opposite approach to whole language – theorising that learning to read is hard and needs to be taught directly over two or three years.
Since adopting explicit instruction, Marsden Road Public School has transformed its NAPLAN results and sustained them, with life-changing results for students.
