How RODEO Elevated The Sound of Modern Hip Hop
In 2018, hip hop surpassed rock to become the most popular genre in music. And the subgenre of trap has directly coincided with that rise in popularity -- consistently dominating the Billboard Hot 100 over the last decade. Named after Atlanta’s slang term for a drug house, the trap genre originated in the early 2000s. T.I. would coin the term in 2003 with his record Trap Muzik. From Young Jeezy’s Trap or Die to Gucci Mane’s Trap House, the genre was stylistically diverse, mainly united by it’s unmistakable hi-hats and heavy 808s.
The genre grew more aggressive in the early 2010s with rappers like Waka Flocka Flame and Chief Keef entering the game. On the other side of the spectrum, trap also began sounding more melodic, minimal and atmospheric. Trap eventually went global, influencing electronic dance music with it’s own iteration of the genre. But it was in 2015 when trap would truly become influential in pop music thanks to a handful of releases -- most notably, Travis Scott’s RODEO.
