I’ve been a Rick and Morty fan since the show first premiered back in 2013. And if you’ve been watching too, you’ll know that in every way, it’s a show of extremes. There have been 9/11 and Pearl Harbour jokes, arguments of greed vs. global warming, ultraviolence and an absolutely crazy amount of sex jokes for a show about a 14 year old.
But Rick and Morty finds balance in presenting its themes and characters with a great deal of heart. And one aspect of the Adult Swim phenomenon that seems to go unnoticed is it’s music. The music too, has its extremes -- from the adlib-ed sexual track “Terryfolds”, the nonsensical rap of “Get Schwifty,” to the heart wrenching moments underscored by Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” or Mazzy Star’s “Look on Down from the Bridge”.
In a show rife with philosophical jokes, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it callbacks and body humour, it’s easy to overlook just how carefully constructed the music of Rick and Morty actually is. And in fact, that’s kind of the point. For every memorable moment, there’s a carefully constructed moment you just forget about and that’s very much by design.
With a new season of the show arriving Sunday, June 20th, let’s take a closer listen to The Music of Rick and Morty.
