Hadrian’s Wall is famous for its massive military presence, but a wall is only as strong as its supply lines. Feeding and arming the thousands of soldiers stationed on Rome’s northernmost frontier required a massive, complex logistical network. This journey moves away from the wall itself to explore two massive supply hubs that kept the Roman army alive and functional.
The trip starts at South Shields, known anciently as Arbeia, where a massive coastal fort transformed into a sprawling supply base packed with over twenty massive granaries. This base became the nerve center for Emperor Septimius Severus when he brought fifty thousand troops to Britain in a massive bid to conquer the far north. You will see how these soldiers lived, what they ate, and how a diverse crew of Mesopotamian boatmen ended up on the windy coast of northeast England.
