Some of the final photographs ever taken inside the World Trade Center’s North Tower were captured by a night-shift worker who had no idea he was documenting a world about to disappear.
In the months before 9/11, electrician and amateur photographer Konstantin Petrov took hundreds of haunting photographs inside the World Trade Center — empty offices, kitchens, elevators, stairwells, dining rooms and extraordinary views of New York City from more than 1,300 feet above the streets below. His images became a rare time capsule of the twin towers in their final months.
For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we used AI to transform Petrov’s still photographs into moving scenes, offering a new glimpse inside the World Trade Center as it appeared in 2001. The movement is an AI reconstruction, but the photographs, locations and moments Petrov captured are real.
This is the story of Konstantin Petrov, the remarkable archive he left behind, and a final journey through the World Trade Center before September 11, 2001.
