Looking at Hokusai’s Ghosts
Hokusai’s work is full of “ghosts,” or cultural legacies—the landscapes, supernatural phenomena, scenes from urban society, and more that inspired him. Take a closer look at these influences and consider the legacy of Hokusai’s own paintings and woodblock prints on modern artists, ranging from the ubiquity of the Great Wave in popular culture to the artist’s fantasy visions and their interaction with modern manga, anime, and film.
