From Chile to Colombia, we will follow the spine of the Andes and along the way uncover small stories about big issues that say something about contemporary Latin America. According to Stef Biemans, the Andes Mountains are a good place to ask that question: 'The backbone of South America is 7000 kilometres long and passes through seven countries. You’ll find Chilean capitalism in the smog of Santiago, and will travel 30 years back in time through the clouds of remote Bolivian mountain villages. I know Latino’s as a politically engaged people. Always fighting, but with a smile. Strong, but not tough as nails. The history of this continent is one of ups and downs. Sometimes there’s a glimmer of hope, then everything seems to fall apart again. I’m wondering how South Americans are doing now. Are they crawling, walking or about to fall down again?'
Latin America is, as it ever was, the continent of extremes; encompassing ancient ruins to mega-cities, towering mountain ranges to vast jungles, and of course, great fortunes and abject poverty.
