President Trump said he spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and urged him to do more to stop wildfire smoke from drifting into the U.S., adding that while America would help combat the fires, "maybe they should pay us some damages." Ontario Premier Doug Ford later responded by defending Canada's firefighting efforts and asking Trump, "Why don't you start helping us?"
