There is no such thing as the giraffe. Not one species — four.
For 267 years, science treated every giraffe on the continent as one animal wearing different coats. Then genome sequencing quietly took that apart. In August 2025, the IUCN officially recognized four separate giraffe species, split not by looks, but by DNA that had been diverging in isolation for over 200,000 years, hidden behind rivers, rift valleys and rainforest the animals never crossed.
In this episode, we follow the genetic trail that undid two centuries of assumption — and the surprisingly human argument over what a "species" even is. We also get into how a 2-metre trachea keeps giraffes almost silent, why their necks may have evolved for combat rather than reaching leaves, and why splitting one giraffe into four turns a "vulnerable" animal into one, the Northern giraffe, quietly down over 80% in 35 years and easy to miss entirely.
