Christa Pike appeared to still be breathing after execution attempt
The governor of Tennessee ordered an investigation and a temporary halt to scheduled executions after Christa Pike, the only woman on the state's death row, appeared to still be breathing and was sent to a nearby hospital in an unknown condition after an attempted execution.
"Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State's most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective," Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement.
