Why are we surrounded by stuff? | The Royal Society
Materials have always shaped the course of history, but in today’s consumer-driven world, where materials are everywhere and easily taken for granted, their importance is easily overlooked.

The production and use of materials accounts for more than 40% of global warming emissions. By rethinking how we make, use, and recycle these materials we can work towards a cleaner world, a greener economy and improve lives across communities.
In this talk, materials scientist, engineer, broadcaster award-winning author and Royal Society Professor of Public Engagement Mark Miodownik will explore how we can reimagine our relationship with the stuff all around us – the clothes we wear, the food we eat and the products we buy – to live more sustainably, both as individuals and as a society.
This talk is part of the Royal Society’s See Stuff Differently programme.
