Heatwave A for Aramco #heatwave #climatechange
As we’re now naming heatwaves after fossil fuel companies, I thought I’d go back to the 22nd of May for the first named heatwave: A for Aramco. Aramco is the largest oil producing company in the world. Since 1965 they are singlehandedly responsible for more than 4% of global greenhouse emissions from the oil they’ve sold. But not all is lost, they are investing $1.7 billion in a carbon capture program to offset these emissions. The first phase will be completed by the end of next year 2027 and will allegedly be able to capture and store up to 9 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, about half of their annual emissions. Wait. About half of a percent of their annual emissions. Hmm. They could have the same effect by just taking a couple of days off each year, by literally doing nothing and saved themselves the $1.7 billion. You don’t need to capture it if it’s still in the ground. Anyway, the next heatwave will begin with the letter C, what do you reckon we should call it?
